Council gave its consent Tuesday to a $350 million wind turbine project on land sandwiched between Highway 401 and County Road 42 outside of Belle River between County Road 27 and Gracey Side Road. Coun. Steve Bezaire voted against the motion in the 6-1 vote and Deputy Mayor Al Fazio declared a conflict.
Council members expressed frustration that they had no control over the wind turbine project as proposed by International Power Canada except to give it consent so that its application can receive an additional two points in competition or oppose it.
The company plans to file its application with the Ontario Power Authority to generate 100 megawatts of power in February.
