Residents don’t want turbines

Council offered its understanding but little else to a group of residents opposing the construction of industrial wind turbines in the municipality.

Resident Donald Petrozzi addressed council Tuesday asking for help to try to prevent the installation of any industrial wind turbines in LaSalle.

He noted the group LaSalle Residents Against Industrial Wind Turbines has hired Toronto environmental lawyer Eric Gillespie to aid them in their quest for an injunction to stop River Canard Energy Inc. from installing two turbines.

Petrozzi said the company has received approval from the provincial government for the turbines, which are expected to go up on land behind Villanova secondary school.

“I’m not for or against it,” Coun. Marc Bondy said. “Do I want it in my backyard? No.”

Body said that council must protect the rights of residents on both sides of the issue and he noted that municipalities have little say in the establishment of wind turbines, which are regulated by the province.

“They are complying with the act,” Mayor Ken Antaya said in regards to River Canard Energy. “They are complying with the province.

“The municipality can’t stop it. We can only say we object.”
