LWSC turbine slowly makes its way from India to Lynn

LYNN – A wind turbine left Chennai, a port in Southeast India, 11 days ago destined for the United States and eventually Lynn, according to Lynn Water and Sewer’s Treatment Operations Director Robert Tina.

Tina gave Water and Sewer Commissioners an update on the nearly seven-year project Monday during the regular meeting.

“It will land in South Carolina on Oct. 2 where it will be in customs for a couple of weeks then it gets trucked up to Lynn,” he said.

Tina said once it arrives everything should be ready so that all workers will have to do is set it in place.

Out at the city’s landfill, where the wind turbine is destined, pile-driving work is under way. Tina said pilings have been driven 150 feet deep but they will have extensions welded on so they can go an additional 19 feet.

“It’s 169 feet to bedrock,” he said.

Since the turbine is being erected on a former dump site, Tina said he wants to make sure the turbine is on solid footing once it goes up, which should only take a few days once it finally arrives.
