Plan for Barr Cregg wind turbines

RES, a renewable energy company, has submitted a planning application for the Barr Cregg Wind Farm on the outskirts of Derry.
The proposal is for seven turbines each with a maximum height of 125 metres to the tip of the blade.
The proposed wind farm has an indicative installed capacity of 12.6 (MW) which will generate clean, renewable energy equivalent to the annual electricity demand of an estimated 7,000 homes a year.
The wind farm is located about three miles from Claudy, seven miles from Derry and 10 miles from Limavady.
Garth McGimpsey, Project Manager, RES, said: “This application is the result of a thorough and extensive environmental assessment of the Barr Cregg site which has shown it to be ideally suited to harness the natural resource of wind to generate clean, green electricity.
“RES takes stakeholder and public consultation very seriously and we have engaged with political representatives, householders, community groups and organisations in the local area since May 2012. The feedback we have received has fed in to the application that has been submitted.
“If planning permission is received the wind farm will provide much needed clean, green and sustainable energy contributing to the Government’s renewable energy targets, create valuable jobs and help stimulate economic growth. It will also generate a community fund, amounting to around £25,000 per year for the lifetime of the wind farm, which will bring significant benefits to the local area.
“As the most advanced renewable energy technology, we firmly believe onshore wind power has a vital role to play in meeting our energy needs. We are confident that this is a very good site for a wind farm and that our sensitively designed project will be an asset to the area.”
