MP’s wind turbine concerns

The North East could become an “energy dumping ground” for the South, according to a Durham MP.

Pat Glass, MP for North West Durham, warned that problems could arise if applications continue to be approved for windfarms in the region.

While stating the renewal energy is the future, the MP said she believes the North East is already contributing its fair share.

Durham County Council recently turned down plans to create two 55 metre-high turbines.

Mrs Glass said one successful application could lead to others. “There are already lots of win turbines,” she said.

“If we are not careful, we could be ringed in giant wind turbines supplying energy for other, richer parts of the country.

“We need to have the future energy infrastructure in place before oil and gas run out but I am concerned every part of this country does its share.  

“Hampshire is twice the size of Durham, uses three times the energy and yet there are virtually no wind turbines there. We want to do our share but we won’t become an energy dumping ground for the South.”
