A group formed to fight a wind farm planned for near the Cairngorms National Park has lodged an objection another project.
Save the Monadhliath Mountains (SMM) campaign came into being to oppose the 31 turbine Allt Duine Wind Farm proposed for a site in the hills to the west of Newtonmore and Aviemore. But now it is opposing SSE’s plans for an 83 turbine wind development near Fort Augustus.
The Stronelairg wind farm has been scaled down from 140 turbines but still faces opposition.
Outdoor author, photographer and former president of the Mountaineering Council of Scotland, Chris Townsend, is spokesman for the SMM campaign.
He said: “The Stronelairg wind farm would represent another blow to the sensitive landscape of the Monadhliath Mountains and the Cairngorms National Park’s special qualities.”
SMM says it is also concerned about Scotland’s dwindling land resources.
An SSE spokeswoman said they had undertaken considerable consultation and as a result had made significant changes to its plans. “We believe it is a good site for a wind farm of this type but it will be up to the Scottish Government to decide,” she added.
