Route 8 traffic detoured after signal wires struck

Journal Star | www.pjstar.com 24 August 2012

Traffic was detoured around a heavily traveled portion of Illinois Route 8 on Friday afternoon after wires supporting temporary traffic signals were knocked down by a truck.

The intersection of Route 8 and School Street was closed about 1:30 p.m. after a truck hauling a wind turbine component through a construction zone made contact with cables supporting the traffic lights.

The cable was stretched and hung lower over the intersection afterward, according to Washington police. A second truck that came through the area then snagged the cable and brought it down over the road.

Traffic was rerouted to give repair crews room to maneuver and in case the wire carried live electricity.
