Wrangle over turbine keeps turning

Controversial plans to place a huge wind turbine in Pollington have met with major opposition from the local parish council, angry residents and an East Riding of Yorkshire councillor.

Coun John Barrett, together with parish members and local residents, have fought a long-running campaign to stop building of a 120 metre high wind turbine in the village.

They attended a planning appeal at County Hall, Beverley, last Thursday and were told a decision on whether to grant permission for the huge wind generator may not be made until late September.

Coun Barrett said in July 2009, Celcon Blocks Ltd, of Pollington, applied to build the wind turbine at their plant in the village.

Following consultations, reports and a public meeting for residents held by East Riding Councillor Caroline Fox, the application was finally brought to a planning committee at County Hall, in January 2012, where he was able to speak on behalf of residents against the application.

At that time he said East Riding of Yorkshire Council refused the application, but in July 2012, Celcon Blocks appealed.

Coun Barrett said: “This application has been a great cause of concern over a long period for the residents of Pollington who are against the erection of this turbine, which would dominate the landscape in and around the village.

“Residents have sent more than 150 letters to East Riding Council and the planning inspectorate in opposition to this turbine. The planning inspectorate visited the area with us.

“We now have to wait for the inspectorate to put its findings into a report and make a final decision.

“I am pleased that members of the parish council and residents attended the appeal with me.”

Pollington Parish Council chairman, Ken Wilson added: “The parish council, along with our ward councillors, have put a lot of of hours work into this on behalf of the residents of Pollington.

“I would like to thank those who attended and spoke at the initial hearing for this application and also at the appeal.”
