What have we done, Vermont?

Burlington Free Press | www.burlingtonfreepress.com 17 August 2012

I traveled to Sherbrooke, Canada from Burlington recently. I decided to drive through Vermont via Newport so I could see some of the beautiful Vermont countryside that I so love. Driving up Vermont 100 past Eden, I was looking forward to traveling Vermont 58 from Lowell to Irasburg. The views to the north towards Jay Peak and the mountain ranges are absolutely breathtaking! In fact the entire road is in my opinion the most picturesque in the state.

I was completely astonished when we turned a bend in the road a little way up the highway. On the left perched high above the sweeping farmland, forests and neat farms were gigantic wind turbines. They seemed much bigger than any I have ever seen elsewhere. They were in various stages of being built. Patches of forest had been ripped apart and I was overcome with sadness and dismay.

I knew wind turbines were being built and there was controversy about them, however I didn’t realize what it was all about until I saw it for myself. I love this area as much as I treasure our view here in Burlington – Lake Champlain for instance. I would be shocked and dismayed if they were being built here. I now understand. What have we done Vermont?
