1,400 objections against turbine in Bodham

More than 1,400 people have objected to plans for a wind turbine in a north Norfolk village.

Farmer David Mack wants to put the turbine on his land at Bodham to generate power for the farm and plant hedgerows and woodland in return.

Objectors to the 86.5m (284ft) high turbine said it would be an “eyesore” and have an adverse effect on the area.

North Norfolk District Council will make its decision on Thursday.

Mr Mack said: “Inevitably with something that is 86m high, there’s going to be a landscape and visual impact, but it’s not going to be as bad as people think it will be.”

No placard-waving

Mary Cubitt, who lives on a farm on the other side of the village, believes a wind turbine is not needed in the area.

“I realise we have to have new sources of electricity but we have out there in the North Sea just a mile from here 80-odd windmills,” she said, referring to Sheringham Shoal windfarm off the Norfolk coast.

“If we need another windmill, why don’t we put it out with the others?”

Mr Mack said he had been surprised at the level of opposition.

“I didn’t think it would get contentious,” he said.

“I thought people would be more used to them and accepting of them.”
