1,000 acres burns off Highway 397 in Kennewick

KENNEWICK, Wash. – About 1,000 acres burned off Highway 397 near East 10th Avenue east of Kennewick about 9:20 p.m. Friday because of a brush fire.

“The fire was in a deep canyon and inaccessible so we had to set up dozer lines around the perimeter and let it burn itself out,” said Mike Harris deputy fire chief for Benton County Fire District 1. “The area was mostly scrub brush. No crops or structures were ever threatened.”

Multiple fire agencies from Benton and Franklin counties as well as city fire departments in Kennewick, Pasco and Richland responded with engines and a bulldozer to a report of a brush fire about 8:15 p.m.

Highway 397 between Olympia Street and Haney Road were closed for about four hours Friday night so fire trucks could move easily back and forth, Harris said. The fire was contained at about 7 a.m. Saturday morning, he added.

“And we don’t know the cause of the fire yet,” Harris said. “That still remains under investigation.”
