Mars’ turbine plans shelved

Mars Petcare has called off plans to build a wind turbine at its Birstall factory.

The controversial planning application was approved in 2010 despite objections from councillors and residents, but the company has announced it will not go ahead.

General manager Jarek Swiqulski said: “Mars respects the environment and communities in which we operate and the views of the people that live within them. We hope the local community will welcome our decision.” He said the company was committed to cutting its fossil-fuel energy, greenhouse gas emissions and water use by 25 per cent by 2015.
