Action group’s turbine protest

Carmarthen Journal | www.thisissouthwales.co.uk 15 August 2012

An action group against plans for a wind turbine in Blaenau are to hold another silent protest.

Saron, Llandybie and Penygroes (Slap) Action group was formed after an application for a turbine near Blaenau was submitted to Carmarthenshire Council.

Campaigners handed a 200-name petition to the county council and Welsh Government, opposing the 77-metre mast – saying it would blight their lives.

But at a meeting in June, applicant and local businessman, Alan Davies, shocked campaigners by announcing – during a meeting of Llandybie Community Council – that he had submitted alternative plans, making the mast smaller.

Annie Oldbury, whose home would be in sight of the turbine, said residents still had worries about the noise of the mast.

“We can hear people talking from there, so I don’t know what the noise of a turbine would be like,” she said.

The application was due to be heard by Carmarthenshire Council’s planning committee in June, but was put back due to the changes.

Campaigners held a silent protest outside the meeting in June, and are planning a second silent protest outside the Old Hall, Llandybie, on September 26, from 6.30pm, while the Community Council discusses the application.

Slap action group is inviting people to attend its next meeting at Caerbryn Hall on September 3, from 7pm.
