East Yorkshire windfarm plans ‘should be blocked’

A block should be put on new wind farms in East Yorkshire, according to the region’s MP who feels a raft of schemes are “close to desecrating” its landscape.

Government figures show the area has had the highest number of planning applications for large onshore wind developments in England over the last ten years, with 25 separate proposals being submitted since 2002.

Most smaller projects are not included in the statistics.

East Yorkshire MP Greg Knight said there should now be a “moratorium” on onshore turbines, saying: “People living here have seen these developments coming and are well aware we are shouldering more than our fair share of wind farms.

“East Yorkshire is an area of outstanding natural beauty and we are getting to the stage now where the number of wind farms is coming close to desecrating it.”

East Riding of Yorkshire Council, which determines planning applications for the region, said there were a number of geographical reasons for the area being so popular with wind farm developers and said each scheme had to be assessed on its own merits and in line with Government planning laws.

It also said it had rejected several applications, only for the council’s decision to be overturned on appeal.
