Firm still plans to build wind farm

A green electricity company has reaffirmed its commitment to building a windfarm near Old Dalby – 18 months on since gaining planning permission for the development.

Gloucestershire firm Ecotricity intends to build nine turbines in a field to the east of the village.

Melton Council’s development committee approved the plans, subject to conditions, at a meeting in December 2010 despite residents’ objections.

The energy firm had originally hoped to have the windfarm up and running during 2011 but now, 18 months on, the development remains on ice.

Ecotricity has previously stated that the nine turbines will generate enough green energy each year to power more than 5,000 homes as well as saving 7,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide going into the atmosphere every year.

Ecotricity spokesperson Stuart Brennan told the Melton Times this week: “We remain committed to progressing our Dalby windpark in Leicestershire.

“It’s a good place to produce wind energy but difficult economic times have meant it’s taken a little longer than otherwise expected.

“The need for wind energy in the UK is undiminished and our commitment to building wind power remains.”
