Energy bills ‘to rise due to wind farms’

Increases in the number of onshore and offshore wind farms will see an average family’s energy bill soar £300, a report has claimed.

Professor Gordon Hughes of Edinburgh University, a former adviser to the World Bank, accused politicians of “blundering” into a green crusade which will cost £124 billion and estimates that, by 2020, domestic electricity bills will have risen by up to 58% under plans for a huge increase in wind turbines.

In the report, for Lord Lawson’s Global Warming Policy, he said: “Unless the Westminster Government scales back its commitment to wind power very substantially, its policy will be worse than a mistake, it will be a blunder.”

Mr Hughes branded wind power “an extraordinarily expensive and inefficient way of reducing CO2 emissions”, and said the same amount of electricity could be generated by modern combined gas cycle plants at 10% of the cost.

RenewableUK said: “The cost of generating clean electricity using wind power is 2p a day per household, a small price to pay to keep the lights on.”
