Cape Vincent passes zoning law restricting wind power

A controversial zoning law that, in part, restricts wind power in Cape Vincent, unanimously passed Wednesday.

Officials tell 7 News their goal is to preserve the uniqueness of Cape Vincent.

The town is the proposed site for a $300 million wind farm.

Many view the law as a potential road block for that and other projects.

The new law limits vibration and sound, along with restricting where turbines can be placed.

Wind turbines must be kept at least 1.25 miles from the village of Cape Vincent, all schools and the Scenic Byway and at least two miles from the most populated areas.

Officials say their plan is based on a series of scientific studies on the affects of turbines.
