Wind farm proposal is submitted to government

Renewables company Eurowind UK has submitted a planning application for the Nathro Hill Wind Farm to the Scottish Government after a lengthy public consultation on the draft proposals.

The full planning application is available locally in Brechin, Glen Lethnot and Forfar to view while a consultation on the application is open through submission to the Scottish Government until August 22.

The wind farm is the largest proposed in Angus to date and the site has a particularly high wind resource compared to other wind farm locations. It has been conservatively estimated that the wind farm could power the equivalent average electricity demand of 28,400 homes, though this figure could rise significantly once site specific wind speed measurements are undertaken.

Ian Lindsay, Director of Eurowind UK said: “Having fed a number of issues from local communities into the design of the wind farm we are pleased to now be submitting our final planning application to the Scottish Government. No commercial wind farms have been constructed yet in Angus and we believe that a larger scale but appropriately sited project could be a major contributor to renewables targets, especially given the strong wind resource on this particular site.”

He added: “We hope that if approved then the wind farm will provide a positive lasting legacy to local communities. Already we have discussed and agreed improvements to the road infrastructure that would be made, but we have also had feedback on the need to invest in rural broadband and community facilities such as halls. With potentially over £200k per annum for 25 years coming from the wind farm to good causes, it would be a major source of funds to address local problems and invest in jobs and training needs for Angus.”

Nathro Hill Wind Farm is being developed by Eurowind UK as part of a portfolio of developments across Scotland. Eurowind UK bring considerable experience of developing wind farms across Europe, both offshore and onshore.

The proposed Nathro Hill Wind Farm will be located on the Careston Estate, 9km NW of Brechin. It will consist of 17 turbines with a total height of up to 134m, each able to generate up to 3.6MW, giving a maximum installed capacity of up to 61MW.
