Farmer loses wind turbine appeal

A farmer refused permission to build a wind turbine on his land has seen his appeal dismissed by the government’s planning inspectorate.

Robert Sherwen, of High Thorny, Carleton, near Egremont, had appealed to the inspectorate after previously having his planning permission for the 76.6m turbine turned down by Copeland Council.

Members of the council’s planning panel had previously ruled, after visiting the site, that the development turbine would “be an isolated, prominent feature, incongruous in its surroundings, which would have a materially harmful effect on the character and appearance in the surrounding rural landscape”.

Mr Sherwen’s plans were the subject of a public meeting which resulted in 240 letters of objection and a 40-signature petition being sent to Copeland Council from residents concerned about a number of issues, including visual impact and noise.
