Wind turbine installed at Walmart DC on Highway 99W

A newly constructed wind turbine started Monday had blades up by Friday next to the Walmart Distribution Center on Highway 99W, south of Red Bluff.

According to the Feb. 2 Tehama County Planning Commission staff report, the 1 megawatt tower stands 397 feet tall and should produce 2,300 kilowatt hours of electricity per year.

It is estimated to decrease Walmart’s annual energy demands by 20 percent, which is equivalent to enough power for 250 average American homes, the staff report shows.

The application for the Use Permit was submitted in December 2011.

The tower is owned and operated by Foundation Windpower through a long-term power purchase agreement and site lease with Walmart.

No written comments were received from concerned residents in the project vicinity, according to the staff report.

A previous use permit was filed in February 2010 with The Green Electric Company, Inc. to put up a 140-foot-tall wind turbine, however, that permit was considered null and void after it sat for a full year without action.

All power coming from the turbine will be used on-site at the Wamart Distribution Center and none of it will be put back on the grid for other use, according to the report.
