Residents opposed to wind turbines call public meeting

The prospect of 19 giant wind turbines on their doorsteps has prompted residents of Corragh outside Bunclody to call a public meeting as they seek to have planning permission withdrawn for some of the 85 high metre windmills withdrawn. The meeting takes place tonight ( Tuesday 8 p.m.) in the Millrace Hotel.

‘It does not matter which way the wind blows, we will have noise from the wind farms,’ said worried Corragh householder Lorna Moorhead. She complained that the developers behind the turbines have been slow to contact and consult the people who live in the area.

She also felt that, with so many windmills due to be erected in the next few years, in four different farms, they will have a cumulative impact. Wexford County Council has already given planning permission to for ten turbines in or around Gibbet Hill in the townlands of Graiguemore and Kiltilly – six being developed by Abo Wind and four by Knocknalour Wind Farm.

One the other side of the road, Ms. Moorhead and her neighbours are bracing themselves for four turbines at Ballynastraw to be installed by Andy Nolan and six turbines by Ballindaggin Green Energy in Johnstown and Ballynastraw.

The residents point out that, meanwhile, Carlow and Wicklow county councils have identified the nearby hillsides around Clonegal and Carnew.

However, they face an uphill battle if they intend to reverse planning decisions that have already been taken.
