PCs renew call for wind farm moratorium

Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives are renewing their call for a moratorium on wind development in the province.

This on the heels of Health Canada’s announcement they’ll study the effects of wind turbine’s on people who live closeby.

Vic Fedeli tells 610 CKTB’s Tom McConnell he’s seen turbines’ effects on people who show up to town hall meetings across the province. They complain of pounding headaches, nosebleeds, tinnitus, nausea & vomiting. Many say the turbines have ruined their lives.

But the PC’s opposition to wind farms is less about health & more about dollars & cents.

Fedeli says the feed in tariff or FIT program that allows wind development is “bankrupting Ontario”. The PCs want FIT shut down. If they formed government, the party would consult with communities to see if they want existing deals reached under FIT to go ahead.

A large scale wind development is in the works for West Niagara. 77 wind turbines will pop up in Pelham, Wainfleet, West Lincoln & Haldimand County by 2014.

The $550-million project is expected to power more than 57 000 homes & create over 700 jobs.

Last month, a Chinese company opened a wind tower production plant at the old Dana plant in Thorold. Long-term, TSP Canada Towers Inc. plans to open a dock on the canal & take on 250 workers.
