Local senator addresses wind turbine health concerns

Senator Frank Lasee of De Pere is proposing that the Public Service Commission change its rules on the placement of wind turbines near homes because of health concerns. Today (7/8), 30 northeast Wisconsin families joined the senator, hoping to change how wind farms are constructed and operated.

David Cappelle and his family believe when a wind farm was put up outside their Town of Morrison home a year ago it caused health problems.

“We started with sleep disorders, headaches, my wife has headaches, and just general not healthy feeling,” describes Cappelle.

Senator Lasee has been against the construction of wind farm projects for a number of years. Now, he’s requesting the Public Service Commission to adopt new rules after reviewing these studies on the health effects from wind turbines.

“You know, I’d like to see them more than a mile away from people’s homes,” says Senator Lasee. “I’d like to see adjoining property owners sign off before they get built.”

Senator Lasee says he plans to bring studies on the health effects of those structures to the Public Service Commission next week.

Meanwhile, Cappelle says his son and wife feel better now that they have moved away from wind farms.

“My wife hasn’t had hardly any headaches only when she goes back to the old house. And, it’s a definite mark of improvement on our quality of life.”

Shirley Wind Turbine has put up eight turbines in Brown County. The company was at the gathering today but did not wish to make a statement.
