Legislator pushes for increased regulations on wind turbines; Lasee presses Public Service Commission to take action

A state lawmaker is challenging a group to increase its regulations for wind turbines.

State Sen. Frank Lasee, R-Ledgeview, says low-frequency noise from wind turbines causes a variety of health problems, and says the Public Service Commission needs to enact new rules to protect the health of those living near turbines.

“It’s time for the PSC to admit the current rules are not good enough,” Lasee said in a news release. “We will hand them independent research that raises legitimate concerns.”

The construction of wind farms has been a contentious issue, particularly in the area around Morrison and Glenmore in southern Brown County. Some area residents say that they suffer health problems that they blame on a small wind farm in the hamlet of Shirley. A company’s proposal to build a wind farm of about 100 turbines in the area was scrapped in 2011 amid debate over how close to homes that government should allow turbines to be installed.

Lasee said turbines cause headaches, earaches, dizziness and nausea. Critics also say proximity to turbines can be harmful to livestock and pets.

Lasee today will present his plan for stricter rules at a news conference at the Lions Club Shelter at Way-Mor County Park, 3828 Brown County Z, Morrison.
