‘Tracker’ bid over turbines

Campaigners fighting plans for wind turbines in Bronte country have developed an online interactive map to highlight the proliferation of turbines on moorland above Bradford.

Thornton Moor Wind Farm Action Group, which is challenging plans by Banks Renewables to build up to four turbines on moorland south of Denholme, has devised a ‘turbine tracker’ to show the location of the dozens of operational turbines on the Bradford and Calerdale border.

The device on the group’s website, sayno2windfarm.org.uk, also shows turbines that have received or been refused planning permission as well as proposed schemes.

Chairman Anthea Orchard said: “We wanted a way to portray to the public the overall picture of wind turbine development in this area. We wanted a snapshot to demonstrate the extent of overdevelopment.

“If we don’t challenge these applications this area will become a wind-farm landscape and it will be acceptable for the Thornton Moor wind farm to go ahead.”

The turbine tracker shows plans have recently been submitted for two 50kw turbines at Tewitt Hall Farm in White Lane, Oakworth measuring more than 34m high.

An application has also been resubmitted for two 39m high, 80kw turbines at Well Heads Farm.

Earlier this year the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England called on Ministers to protect areas such as the moorland in the Bradford district and warned it could be blighted by a “hurricane of wind farms”.
