Landmark turbine blown off course

A controversial application for a wind turbine on one of Yorkshire’s famous landmarks, has been withdrawn following hundreds of objections.

Natural England, English Heritage and the Ministry of Defence, as well as 600 residents, visitors and caravan owners had objected to the plans for a wind turbine at Flamborough Head.

The 112ft turbine at Hartendale Farm between Danes Dyke and South Landing – close to two nature reserves and sites of special scientific interest – had been branded “industrialisation” of a beautiful coastline, which is vital to East Coast tourism.

David Hinde, who was part of a recent campaign that successfully fought off an application to build three turbines at Bempton, said the protests had been “unprecedented”.

She added: “Congratulations must go to the residents who have fought hard to protect the area. This sends out a clear message to wind farm planning agents and landowners in the area that heritage coast must come first.”
