Road set to be shut in Eye to make way for turbine cables

Members of Eye Business Forum have expressed concern about one of the main roads linking the north Suffolk town to the A140 being scheduled to close entirely for up to three months while electrical cables are installed for wind turbines being constructed on Eye Airfield.

Castleton Way in Eye is scheduled to be shut between Victoria Hill and Millfield from July 23 to August 31, with the same road then due to be closed between Mill Field and Rapsy Tapsy Lane and between the latter road and the airfield entrance August 27 to October 19.

Felix Williams, a town councillor, said: “This is a popular access road to Eye, so local traders are concerned.”

He added: “We knew a new access road for the turbines was going to be built, but I don’t think anyone realised it was going to impact on the current road structure so much.

The town council has asked county councillor Guy McGregor to try and renegotiate the road closure, and hope to see something like a temporary traffic light system used.

In the meantime, Cllr McGregor said no roads will be closed during school term-time. Hartismere School shuts from July 21 to September 4.
