Pioneer Green Energy has just received approval for the installation of six new met. towers in the Dunnigan Hills/Zamora area of Yolo County, CA, bringing the total number of met. towers to nine. The Yolo County Planning Commission voted in favor of the application on Thursday, June 28, 2012, despite objections from those in the affected community who argued that to be in compliance with CEQA, the met tower application should have been considered part of Pioneer’s overall application to install 400 industrial wind turbines in the same area, rather than evaluating it as a separate project. This would have would resulted in a full EIR before the met towers could have been approved. Opponents to the project, mostly rural residents who will be directly impacted by the construction of these massive towers on neighboring properties, continue to voice their opposition, but have so far been unsuccessful in stopping it. This wind turbine project would be located in a very unique grassland habitat, on some of the most highly erodible soil in the state. It is also located in the middle of the Pacific Flyway, one of only four major migratory bird routes in North America. The Dunnigan Hills provide both nesting and foraging habitat for countless species of threatened/endangered species of raptors, songbirds, and bats.
