Giant wind turbine brings traffic on main Argyll route to a standstill

STV | stv.tv 29 June 2012

A giant wind turbine caused traffic misery for hundreds of drivers on the main route through western Argyll.

The turbine stem was carried in two sections by two lorries from its base at the Machrihanish plant, near Campbeltown, towards Glasgow.

Sections of the 135-mile route were shut as the heavy load was accompanied by a police escort, causing long tailbacks along its journey on the A83 and A82.

Driver Iain MacKay, 33, said: “I’ve never seen anything like it. It was huge, and that’s just the stem without the blades.

“We were stuck for ages.

“A few people were getting a little irate but I suppose they have to transport them somehow.”
