‘Considerably more than a dozen’ bids for wind farms in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia’s renewable electricity administrator has received more bids from wind farm developers than he expected.

John Dalton of Power Advisory LLC has said he anticipated getting somewhere around 12 submissions.

“We’ve exceeded that. It’s considerably more than a dozen,” Dalton said late Wednesday afternoon, just minutes after the deadline for filing bids.

The independent administrator said he couldn’t give an exact tally because staff were still examining the paperwork.

“We’re very happy with the level of interest,” said the Massachusetts-based consultant. “It’s consistent with our expectations, which were quite high.

“We think this is good news for Nova Scotia (electricity) customers. We’re hoping that a good price for renewable electricity is being offered.”

The administrator is expected to announce the winning projects in early August.

Some developers have said they expect up to four or five wind farms to be approved.

Dalton has told developers they can expect a decision by July 19.

A further 10 days have been set aside for contracts to be negotiated and signed before the public announcement is made.

The province wants to add 300 gigawatts of renewable electricity to the Nova Scotia Power grid, starting in 2015.

The additional green energy will help the province meet its 2015 renewable energy target of 25 per cent.
