Expansion of Lingan Wind Farm sought

The Cape Breton Post Staff | www.capebretonpost.com 27 June 2012

LINGAN – An environmental assessment will be the first step in a proposed 9.2 megawatt expansion of the Lingan Wind Farm.

A report by Dillon Consulting of Halifax says the expansion will consist of four, 2.3 megawatt wind turbines, each of which will be 78 metres high at the hub with an 82-metre rotor diameter. The report also says the turbines would be located at least 550 metres from the nearest house, as an internal company policy of the company that owns the turbines.

Pending approval of the environmental assessment, construction on the project is expected to start in mid-winter of 2013, with commissioning in the fall of 2013.

The Lingan Wind Farm is located between New Waterford and Lingan and is being developed by SP Development Limited Partnership, a subsidiary of Sprott Power Corp. of Toronto. Sprott now has seven turbines on the Lingan site, with an eighth expected to be added in the fall as part of a previous project approval.

The provincial Environment Department will decide if the expansion project can be granted conditional environmental assessment approval by Aug. 11.

An environmental assessment is required under the provincial Environment Act to identify any anticipated environmental impacts of a proposed project.

Copies of the environment assessment registration information can be viewed at various sites, including the Civic Centre in Sydney, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality’s citizens service centre in New Waterford, the Ecology Action Centre in Halifax, provincial environment offices in Sydney and Halifax, as well as through the Environment Act website at gov.ns.ca/nse/ea.

The public is invited to submit written comments to: Environmental Assessment Branch, Nova Scotia Environment, PO Box 442, Halifax, N.S., B3J 2P8 on or before July 22, 2012, or contact the department at 902-424-3230, 902-424-0503 (fax) or by email at EA@gov.ns.ca.
