Appeal over wind farm distancing

A councillor has criticised planners for not setting a minimum distance between homes and wind farms.

Paul Robinson, who represents Howdenshire on East Riding Council, asked the authority to look at setting guidelines 18 months ago and again last week.

Lincolnshire County Council said this month that villages with 10 houses or more should not have wind farms in more than 90 degrees of their field of view, which would normally equate to 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) from windows in homes.

Council leader Steve Parnaby said they had taken up the issue last time with the Secretary of State and not received a positive response and a recent House of Commons paper rejected the idea of a minimum separation distance in England.

Coun Robinson said he had put the question as it had been suggested by the council’s own legal team at a public inquiry over the two wind farm proposals at Spaldington. He insisted they needed an extra tool in their armoury to defend small rural communities, adding: “I’m not asking for 10km, people shouldn’t have to live in the shadow of giant turbines. Ultimately we have the power to determine what’s acceptable and what’s not.”
