Councillors to look at windfarm proposals

North-West Evening Mail, www.nwemail.co.uk 19 June 2012

Controversial plans for two Millom windfarms will go before planning councillors tomorrow.

Applicant REG Windpower Ltd has applied to Copeland Borough Council for permission to build six wind turbines on land at Langthwaite, near Millom.

Each turbine would stand at 100m high and the farm would cover 12.67 hectares of land.

An access track off the A5093 would need to be created for construction and maintenance purposes.

The turbines are expected to have a 25-year life expectancy and produce 12 megawatts of power.

Both Millom Without Parish Council and Whicham Parish Council registered objections to the plans, with the latter adding: “The proposed site is one of significant natural beauty and the visual impact would be horrendous.”

Millom Town Council also opposed the plans, objecting to the height and visual impact of the turbines.

The borough council has received 13 letters of opposition from residents.

A site visit for members has been recommended before determining the application as it raises ‘significant issues’.

Plans to build five, 120m high turbines on land off HMP Haverigg will also go before planning committee.

Millom Town Council has registered an objection to the plans, on the basis of poor infrastructure for access to the site, height of the turbines and visual impact.

The borough council has also received seven letters of objection from residents.

But 42 postcards in support of the proposal have also been received.

A site visit for members has been recommended before determining the application as it raises ‘significant issues’.
