Colwyn Bay wind turbine plan still in the air

A college official has welcomed a developer’s proposed bid to build a wind turbine and education centre.

Up to 200 students a year could use it to learn about green energy.

But locals fear it would be “inappropriate” to have a wind turbine and a building in open countryside.

The land would by at Glyn Farm on the edge of the Nant y Coed Valley near Colwyn Bay.

Richard Rees, of Bryn y Gwynt Ltd, Rhyd y Foel near Abergele, said he still hopes to build a wind turbine this year.

Chris Smith, Coleg Llandrillo Menai’s Department of Technology curriculum director, supports the idea of an educational centre.

He said: “It could be used by 50 to 200 students a year depending on what’s in it. And schoolchildren would be very interested in it too. We are watching on the sidelines and we would hope it goes through. All we can do is wait patiently and see what happens. We don’t want to upset any locals.”

On the college official’s view of any educational centre, Mr Rees said: “I do welcome their support.”

No date has been given for any planning application for a windturbine and green centre to Conwy County Council. But Cllr Chris Hughes said some locals are worried about an “inappropriate” turbine and green centre in unspoilt countryside popular with walkers.
