Vow to carry on turbine protests

South Wales Evening Post, www.thisissouthwales.co.uk 14 June 2012

A group of campaigners who protested against a proposed wind farm development five years ago have vowed to try to stop another one being built.

Developer RES is holding exhibitions this week to allow people to find out more about their plans for the Mynydd Marchywel Wind Farm, which would be situated on ground between Rhos and Crynant.

Simon Boex was a member of the March Hywel Protection Group which opposed similar plans in 2007.

He said: “March Hywel is an area of unspoilt countryside with open access and fantastic views across the Neath and Swansea Valleys.

“On a good day you are able to see Mumbles, the North side of Gower and right around to the tops of the Brecon Beacons.

“I hope people and those who oppose the developments go and see the exhibition and then join the group to oppose any future development proposals that RES will submit for planning.”

Chris Jackson, RES project manager, said: “This site was identified by RES some years ago and more than five years of wind monitoring has demonstrated that it has very good wind speeds.

“We believe the revised scheme will make a valuable contribution to renewable energy targets in Wales while minimising environmental and visual impacts.”

An exhibition on the proposed development will take place today at Crynant Rugby Club from 2pm until 8pm.

There will also be another exhibition tomorrow at Cilfrew Community Centre, also from 2pm until 8pm.
