Single faulty component shuts down nation’s largest wind farm

Turbines on England’s largest wind farm are standing idle because a faulty part needs to be replaced.

The 22 110-metre turbines at Fullabrook, between Barnstaple and Ilfracombe in North Devon, are expected to be out of action for most of the month because of a fault with a single piece of equipment, the company behind it has confirmed.

The site, which is billed as producing enough energy to power 30,000 homes, only became fully operational at the end of February.

It remains controversial after a barrage of complaints about noise from angered residents.

ESB, parent company of operators Devon Wind Power, said in a statement: “Fullabrook wind farm was taken off line on 24 May to carry out planned testing of electronic systems.

“Testing takes place on a regular basis. It was during this testing that an issue arose which necessitates the replacement of a component.

“Devon Wind Power expects the wind farm to return to full service by the end of the month.”
