Multi-million dollar Wellington wind farm unveiled

Plans for a $200 million wind farm near Wellington will be the first to meet the state’s proposed requirements for these types of developments.

Infigen Energy wants to build about 40 turbines near Mount Bodangora.
The company has completed an Environmental Impact Statement outlining how it plans to minimize noise and heritage impacts as well as concerns about flora and fauna and telecommunications in the area.
The development manager, Frank Boland, says the document has been prepared with the Director General’s requirements and draft wind farm guidelines in mind.
“We lodged it on the basis of the previous DGRs but during that process the draft guidelines were released and the director general requested that we have regard for them and fortunately we’d done a pretty good environmental assessment before that so it made it quite easy to meet some of those new guidelines,” he said.

The wind farm is expected to generate up to 100 megawatts of power.

Mr Boland says residents have 60 days to view its response to the requirements from the Department of Planning.

“The environmental assessments included a thorough noise study, we’ve also done flora and fauna, telecommunication’s been a very large one out there with Mount Bodangora being a central point and we’ve also done Aboriginal Cultural Heritage.”
