EverPower granted extension

ALLEGANY – The Town of Allegany Planning Board voted on Monday to grant a one-year extension for a special-use permit and site plan for EverPower Wind Holdings Inc. to construct 29 wind turbines in the Chipmonk and Knapp Creek areas.

The 30-minute meeting, held at the Allegany Senior Center, drew a modest-sized crowd comprised of representatives of EverPower as well as residents of the two communities targeted for a wind turbine farm. The one-year extension also included an agreement that if the current litigation filed by Concerned Citizens of Cattaraugus County fails, construction of the wind farm could begin as soon as 90 days after the court case is resolved.

The company, also referred to as Allegany Wind LLC., received approval from the previous town board last August to construct the wind turbine farm on 9,000 acres in the Chipmonk and Knapp Creek areas. The $160 million project, however, has been a heated and controversial issue in the community for the past several years and was the catalyst for a lawsuit filed by Concerned Citizens. While a requested injunction against the wind farm was dismissed in Supreme Court, the lawsuit is currently on appeal.
