Windmill meeting Monday in Madison

MADISON – A public hearing in the Town of Madison will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at Madison Central School to allow residents to weigh in on a proposed moratorium on wind turbines.

At the suggestion of concerned residents, the town planning board has proposed a one-year moratorium on the development of windmills in the town. Supervisor Ron Bono says the moratorium will give town officials time to review its local regulations pertaining to wind farms.

No action will be taken by the town board at the meeting Monday but if the moratorium is eventually passed, it will effectively stop the proposed $110 million 36-turbine project slated for the southeast corner of Madison for its one-year term. Home to more than a dozen already-erected wind turbines, the newest project is the largest in both the size of the machines and number for Madison.

The moratorium will allow the town to adjust is regulations to control the permitted setbacks from homes. Personally, Bono said he’s concerned about the number of turbines that would be installed. He said the wind farm will likely change the landscape of the area if the project isn’t reduced.
