Turbine protester hits back at claims

Keighley News, www.keighleynews.co.uk 1 June 2012

The chairman of a group campaigning against a planned windfarm has hit out at a parish councillor’s comment about people who oppose wind turbines.

Anthea Orchard, chairman of the Thornton Moor Windfarm Action Group, was reacting to Councillor Barry Thorne, who had said that some people who object to wind farms displayed “Neanderthal” attitudes.

He was speaking during a meeting of Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury Parish Council, when he also argued that without wind turbines people would be reliant on nuclear power or coal.

Mrs Orchard said: “I have to say that the last time I checked, we live in a world where freedom of speech is allowed. Members of the Thornton Moor Windfarm Action Group were therefore somewhat offended by Councillor Thorne’s comments, branding anyone objecting to wind farms as ‘Neanderthals’.

“Wind energy is not the answer to our climate change problems, and if it wasn’t for the very lucrative subsidies, this industry would not exist.”

Responding to Mrs Orchard this week, Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury council chairman, Coun John Huxley, said he regretted any offence caused.
