SCWA drops turbine proposal at Laurel Lake

A 150-foot wind turbine proposed for the Laurel Lake Preserve that had locals up in arms over the winter will not move forward, according to a Newsday article.

In January, neighbors largely disapproved of the proposal – put forth by the Suffolk County Water Authority – at a public hearing at Mattituck-Laurel Library.

A financial analysis concluded that the $500,000 turbine, which the Town Board first discussed over the winter, would take 20 years to pay off, leading to doubts about how worthwhile the proposal was.

The report quotes SCWA Board Chairman James Gaughran as saying the following: “Our original estimate was that the payback period would be at most 12 years. Now we’re being told it will be 20 years or even more.”
