No committee for CAW turbine

Saugeen Shores council has said thanks – but no thanks to a proposal from the Canadian Auto Workers to set up a community liaison committee to monitor the CAW’s turbine.

The proposed liaison committee would monitor the operation of the CAW wind turbine located at the Family Education site in Port Elgin.

Deputy Mayor Luke Charbonneau says after looking at the terms of reference he sees no grounds for the town to take part in the committee and he’s disappointed with the effort made by the CAW.

Charbonneau says he was promised by CAW President Ken Lewenza that he would ensure that the turbine would not be permitted to hurt anyone in Saugeen Shores.

However now, Charbonneau says the CAW is falling back on Ministry of Environment standards which are not near as stringent as what he was led to believe would be the conditions.

Charbonneau says if the CAW is going to make sure the turbine isn’t going to hurt anyone, how will they deal with any complaints and what is the definition of hurting anyone.

Charbonneau says he wants to know what remedies they will apply to answer any concerns.

Mayor Mike Smith says there were all sorts of things said about health issues and what would be done to address them but none was in the terms of reference.

He says they need to sit down with Lewenza and have a face-to-face talk about the turbine.

The turbine is fully constructed but is not in operation yet.
