Contractor starts heavy construction on Oahu wind farm

The contractor building a 69-megawatt wind energy project on Oahu’s North Shore has started heavy construction on the facility.

RMT Inc., a Wisconsin based firm specializing in the design and construction of wind and solar energy generating facilities is building the Kawailoa Wind project for developer First Wind LLC.

RMT broke ground at Kawailoa in 2011, and recently started work on the foundations that will anchor the project’s 30 Siemens 2.3-megawatt wind turbines, the company said in a news release. The project will include two electrical substations and a 46-kilovolt transmission like that will feed the power into the Hawaiian Electric Co. grid.

Construction at Kawailoa Wind is expected to be completed by the end of 2012. When complete, Kawailoa will be the largest wind energy facility in Hawaii, with the capacity to generate enough clean energy to power the equivalent of 14,500 homes on the island, or as much as five percent of Oahu’s annual electrical demand.
