Board sets public hearing on wind moratorium

By Chris Hoffman | Madison County Courier | www.madisoncountycourier.com 20 May 2012

At the regular meeting of the Madison Town Council Thursday, May 10, Town Supervisor Ron Bono said town attorney William Gettman submitted a draft of a new local law to enact a moratorium on wind farm development in the town for review by the Town Council.

Bono had only one extra copy of the proposed new law, but said he would make it available to the public on the town’s website.

Jane Welsh of Madison Matters thanked the town council members for considering a moratorium. Pam Fuller presented the council with additional petitions containing 94 signatures in support of a moratorium.

The board unanimously voted to schedule a public hearing to discuss the proposed local law. The tentative date is Thursday, June 7, at Madison High School, pending confirmation that the school auditorium is available on that date. Formal notice will be published on the town’s website and in local papers, as required by law.

Council members chose this date to provide sufficient time for members to review the proposed law. Bono said he received it only a few hours before the meeting and had not had a chance to look at it.

After some discussion, this date was also chosen so the public hearing could take place before the next town council meeting Thursday, June 14, at which point the Council could decide whether to adopt the proposed law and enact a moratorium.

Council meetings are held the second Thursday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at the town offices located at 7358 Route 20, Madison. For more information, visit townofmadisonny.org/.
