Wind turbine rejected over Ministry of Defence radar fears

Sunderland Echo, www.sunderlandecho.com 19 May 2012

Plans for a new wind turbine on Wearside have been rejected.

Sunderland City Council has refused permission for the 18.5metre-high installation, at Middle Haining Farm, Stoneygate, Houghton.

Planning officers said the proposal “by virtue of its siting and positioning, would cause unacceptable interference to the Ministry of Defence’s AD radar at Brizlee Wood, to the detriment of the effective operation of the radar”.

The officers also refused the turbine on the grounds that it would have had a “detrimental impact on the bio-diversity of the area”.

They added: “The proposal, by reason of its size, scale, positioning and visual impact from surrounding areas, would unduly compromise the openness and visual amenity of the green belt.”
