Askam urged to oppose windfarm

Askam residents have been urged to oppose plans for a windfarm which would be visible from across the Duddon Estuary.

Anti-windfarm campaigner Les Nichols made the rallying call in response to REG Windpower’s application to build a six-turbine windfarm at Langthwaite, near Millom.

Mr Nichols – a leading figure in the Marton, Askam and Ireleth Windfarm Action Group – told a meeting of Askam and Ireleth Parish Council that Askam residents’ concerns should be considered by the planning authority, Copeland Borough Council, because the structures would be visible across the water.

Mr Nichols, of Ireleth, told the meeting on Tuesday evening: “If you look out at sea, all you will see is wind turbines.

“And we’ve got the Harlock Hill (five turbines between Ulverston and Barrow) ones as well.

“We are going to be fenced in totally by wind turbines if this doesn’t stop.

“It’s going to be in the face of everybody on this side of the estuary.”

Ten letters of objection to the proposed Langthwaite turbines have been received by the planning authority.

The plans have been put on hold following a change in planning policy, but the application is set to go live again within the next month. Mr Nichols said: “There’s only 10 letters of objection but, again, it’s all being kept quiet.

“They are nearly as high as Blackpool Tower (518 feet-high) and you are going to have six of them.

“I wish everybody in Parklands and Askam would start writing in asking for them not to be built.”
