Wind project could face $11 million increase

DERBY – Green Mountain Power is facing a potential $11 million cost increase for its 21-turbine wind power project on Lowell Mountain because of transmission upgrades requested by the operators of the New England electric grid.

GMP estimates the project will cost about $150 million. But the price may jump by about 7 percent because of a recent decision by ISO-New England, which operates the regional grid.

ISO-New England concluded that the utility will need to invest in a new voltage control system to balance the impact of electricity flowing into the grid.

Utility spokeswoman Dorothy Schnure said it disagrees and is talking with ISO about whether there are less expensive alternatives.
