Villagers to challenge £365m windfarm in court

People living near to where England and Wales’ biggest windfarm is set to be built, have called for a judicial review into plans the to build 76 turbines on Pen y Cymoed mountain in Neath Port Talbot. The Glyncorrwg Action Group say that the decision to allow the £365million development will have a devastating impact on the community.

Last week the UK Government’s Energy and Climate Change Minister, Charles Hendry, gave the go ahead for the project despite local opposition. Campaigners are now calling for him to reconsider that decision.

Villagers have fought against proposals to build a wind farm in the stunning mountainous area for 18 years.

We were very disappointed to hear the news that it has been granted planning permission. You have handed over a slice of Welsh countryside – a beautiful green valley surrounded by hills. This site, which will horrify residents and visitors, has been imposed by Whitehall onto our small community. We fully intend to fight our corner and we seek a judicial review on the decision to build the wind farm.

Earlier this month an application from Swedish company Vattenfall to build the turbines was cleared and construction could start as early as next year. The turbines will be among the highest in Europe – higher than the London Eye and the Second Severn Crossing.
