Windmill company pulls the plug

Two multi-million dollar energy projects, some in the works since 2005, have been scrapped.

An Oregon company says it’s no longer planning to build wind turbines in parts of Bedford and Clearfield counties.

A spokesperson with Iberdrola Renewables, Incorporated of Portland said the company pulled the plug on the energy projects for a number of reasons.

“This is a challenging time with wind energy right now, with policy uncertainty and the state of the economy. So as a result, we are really focusing our efforts on our existing fleet of roughly 50 renewable facilities across the country,” Iberdrola Spokesperson Paul Copleman said.

The plan was to place 24 windmills on Dunning and Evitt’s Mountains in Bedford County and 40 between Grampian and Luthersburg in Clearfield County, in what was called, The Clover Run Project.

Copleman said the landowners that they had leases with have been notified.

According to the group Save Our Allegheny Ridges, or SOAR, many Bedford County residents were concerned that development along the ridgeline would compromise the community’s rural historic district designation.
