Wind farm company plans extra turbines at Fairburn

The company which runs the Fairburn Wind Farm is proposing to build an extension of extra turbines.

As part of SSE Renewables proposals to erect more turbines on the site near Strathconon, representatives of the company are due to meet with Muir of Ord Community Council tonight (Thursday) to present their plans.

The exact number of turbines is still uncertain – the maximum has been set at 35, although it is expected to be fewer than that.

The existing wind farm, which has been operational since 2009, consists of 20 turbines.

Public exhibitions about the proposals were held in Muir of Ord, Strathpeffer and Marybank in March and Gavin Steel, SSE’s community liaison manager, said more would be held in these communities later in the summer after the final design was completed.

He said the firm was also willing to meet with other local community councils.

As well as turbines, the development would include access tracks and passing bays, meteorological masts, a control building and electrical substation, together with a permanent crossing of the River Orrin.

The site, which will be known as Fairburn Extension, lies to the south of the existing operational wind farm and would be 3.5km from Marybank. The final choice of operating capacity, turbine size and layout will be based on environmental and technical considerations.
